As HBO’s hit drama, The Newsroom is set to come back this August for its highly anticipated sophomore season, Emily Mortimer, who plays the savvy newsroom producer “MacKenzie McHale” on the intensely smart behind-the-scenes drama, trades in her character’s prowess for covering the news, for making it on the covers instead. She’ll grace the covers of Modern Luxury magazines: Angeleno, Chicago Social, Riviera and Houston Magazine. She donned some couture and celebrity hair stylist Matthew Monzon shares his hairstyling how-to.
Monzon reveals he had to be sure to consider location and the different fashions for the styling. “Keeping consideration for the locations that we were shooting in, as well as the different clothing options that Emily would be wearing, together with the photographer and the Fashion Editor we decided that the best option to carry throughout the story would be soft, touchable hair that had some texture to it.”
The four magazine covers were very different but all showed Mortimer’s beauty and easy grace. Angeleno’s cover showed Mortimer wearing a summery, but exquisite Oscar de La Renta dress with fine beading and beautiful watercolor accenting, while on Riviera, she was elegant in a black and white Vionnet gown – both unique looks not repeated in the other three magazine spreads. For the rest of her photo-shoot looks, Mortimer wore a pink ruffle cape and pants by Valentino with Rete ivory silk blouse (which also served as her Chicago Social cover), in yet another shot a Louis Vuitton light blue flower print double-faced cashmere coat, and finally a rich long-sleeve pleated gown made of satin by Zac Posen (doubling as her Houston magazine cover look as well).
Monzon started with damp hair and combed in Joico Power Whip whipped foam. “Foams are one of my all-time favorite products to use because they have great volume building qualities,” says Monzon.
Once the foam was combed through, he rough dried the hair about 75%, then taking a medium sized round brush, created extra volume at the base while smoothing the ends to finish up the blow-dry. He then placed each section into a clip as he worked and let them cool. After Mortimer had been through makeup, he took out the sections and broke these up using his fingers. At this point Monzon states, “I wanted to give the hair a bit more volume so I sprayed the roots with Joico Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo. The best thing about this dry shampoo is that it is clear and doesn’t change the color of the hair as some other dry shampoos can leave the hair dusty or chalky looking.” He then took the top sections of the head and back brushed the hair to give it that “piecey,” tousled quality.
Monzon finishes by saying that as they continued shooting “the hair sometimes seemed better to be put up or back depending on the look of the outfit and the environment. So I used the Joico Texture Boost, sprayed it on the hair to sweep back the hair into a top knot for one look and a French twist for another look.”
Throughout the day Monzon also used Joico Humidity Blocker Finishing Spray as needed per the look of that particular picture.
